Why polystyrene as the only alternative for beekeeping.

Why polystyrene as the only alternative for beekeeping.

Servus!
If you are on this page, then the thought of passing the apiary on the new type of hive, namely polystyrene hives, or you intend to test how such a hive can bring you more steam in your apiary, worries you. I assure you that here you will find all the arguments that will make you choose to make this choice.
Right from the beginning I want to inform you that polystyrene contains about 98% air and 2% polystyrene according to the international standard ISO14025, the manufacturing process has the least impact on the environment. Much less resources are used in the manufacture of this product than in the manufacture of other thermal insulation materials such as: glass mineral wool, basalt mineral wool, extruded polystyrene, cork thermal insulation, polyurethane foam, thermal insulation films, cellulose fiber thermal insulation.
As physical properties, polystyrene has a polymeric material, weakly transparent, amorphous or partially crystalline, thermally workable (thermoplastic). It is not an electrical conductor. It is made of styrene monomer, a simpler liquid hydrocarbon. Polystyrene is one of the most common types of plastic, with a significant global consumption of billions of kilograms per year.
Characteristics:
1. Solid at room temperature
2. It can be processed by heating
3. It has a softening temperature of about 100 C and returns to the solid state by cooling
4. It is used in massive or spongy form.
In addition, expanded polystyrene is not harmful to human health and the environment. So we use many polystyrene-like materials such as rubber, synthetic fabrics, polyethylene, food packaging. All these materials are part of our lives, things so common that sometimes we do not know another better alternative to change them. It does not contain dangerous, toxic, poisonous substances. During 60 years of use there was no need to apply personal protective measures (protective mask, gloves). During this time, no cases of polystyrene-associated disease were reported.
Finally, in terms of ecology, due to its inert nature, polystyrene is biologically neutral with a stable structure over the years, which contains no gases other than air, which guarantees the absence of allergies or hidden diseases.
